Inspiration through baseball

When I look at the leaders of the past, present, and future it is easy to focus on certain leaders and lose the ability to draw lessons from any leader.  Today was one of those moments that I realized I need to focus beyond fire service leadership to ensure I am a well-rounded person and leader.  It’s amazing how the simplest things can make you have one of those aha moments.  For me it was watching my son’s baseball coach.  This man may never lead firefighters into a burning building or soldiers into battle but he gets it.  He understands motivational techniques, time management, and how to care for his people.  Although his motivational technique may involve pizza after the game, he knows how to balance things between productive teamwork and fun.  My entire career I have aspired to be like the great fireservice leaders that are in the books we read however, today I just want to have the skills of a little league baseball coach.

  1. Great point. Coaching kids sports teams is a great education into patience, managing different personalities, providing feedback, teaching technique, and also managing outside forces (the parents!). It’s not an easy job and we should all thank those that volunteer their time to do it.
